About BIG-Z
Project Development Objective
The Project Development Objective is to increase access to improved living conditions and service delivery in targeted areas in Zanzibar and to enhance the institutional capacity of the government.
What BIG-Z does
BIG-Z is a US$150 million integrated development project supported by the World Bank and implemented by the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar through the Ministry of Finance and Planning. The project covers Unguja and Pemba and is designed to improve access to basic infrastructure and services for approximately 230,000 urban and rural residents while strengthening institutional capacity in urban management, municipal finance, and service delivery.
Governance
BIG-Z is governed by the Project Steering Committee (PSC) and Project Technical Committee (PTC), and implemented by the Project Management Team (PMT) under the Ministry of Finance and Planning, supported by thematic technical teams, technical coordinators, focal persons, and a Project Management Consultancy.
Geography
Investments are located across both Unguja and Pemba, with a focus on Stone Town and Mjini Magharibi as well as Pemba urban centres including Chake Chake, Mkoani, Wete, and Micheweni.
